Scott McWilliams
Auckland, New Zealand

Another Scott on the list - and a Scottish one to boot. Have lived in New Zealand for the last 15 years and can't imagine a neater little country to live in. Married, 44 years old, with 2 kids (aged 11 and 8) and they really help keep things in perspective. Work for a medical publishing company as a business analyst, although I am really an editor/writer. My background is Pharmacology/Physiology. Always been a runner (for too long judging by the aches and pains everywhere) and low-level cyclist. Thought about triathlons (but swim like a brick). Currently having much more fun on the bike and stepping up my mileage! Hobbies - never enough time for them all, but have catholic tastes in music, love to cook and I'm an information junkie! Never imagined myself with cancer - always felt that the odds were in my favour - so many family and friends had experienced or died from cancer that I thought I must be "safe" - statistically speaking. Certainly makes you sit up and think, and makes you much more aware of what is and what isn't important in life. So, in a sense it was a good thing:)

Cancer Overview:

General Cancer Type: Testicular

Specific Cancer Type: Seminoma

Treatment Summary:
Just glad I was in the habit of self-examination and picked it up really early - I strongly recommend that every guy does it - regularly. Preaching to the converted I know, but to any other men who read this - check yourself regularly.
Standard orchidectomy and 10 sessions of radiotherapy - and hopefully that's it. All went really smoothly and I'm grateful for that - although the suspense can be unnerving and that was undoubtedly the worst part of the whole process.
