Treatment Summary:
Had PSA of 5.2 in Oct 99. Biopsy in Nov 99 was negative, but developed severe infection from procedure. PSA jumped to 13.0 with Free PSA of 0.7. Antibiotics for 3 months. PSA rose to 17.4. Biopsy in Feb 00 was positive in 1 of 8 needle samples. Gleason = 6, Stage II, T1cN0M0. Four-month Lupron iinjections in 4/00 and 8/00. Brachytherapy with 120 seeds on 10/12/2000 followed by 25 external beam raditaion treatments, ending on 1/5/2001. Treatment much easier than anticipated. Only conmplications were urinary restrictions due to prostate swelling, rectal bleeding for two weeks during external radiation, and rectal discomfort from radiation-induced nerve irritation. Experienced "PSA bump" to 3.2 in mid-2002. Rad Onc indicates this happens in 15-25% of brachytherapy patients and may actually be an indicator of successful treatment. PSA has remained stable at 0.1 since October 2003.
